Summerhall
BRIEF
This project focuses on an intriguing space in Edinburgh.
Summerhall at the junction of Causewayside and Hope Park Terrace is a 2 acre strange and surreal warren of a dizzying range of architectural styles. It used to house the Royal (Dick) Veterinary College, but is now a proto-arts complex, creeping into the consciousness of the cultural landscape.
A timeline of a building shifting from Science to Art.
Your job is to inhabit Summerhall and immerse yourselves in its design and nature. Look beyond the ordinary and focus on something that catches your eye. See how people use the place at the moment and how they have possibly adapted it to meet their requirements. Select an area space or element that you are drawn to. Decide on a function that will engage people and promote the link between Art and Science. You will be assigned a timescale for your project to last – this could be as little as 5 seconds or as much as 5000 years. Think about how you design for these two functions – place and time – and how you will promote this to others.
This project is undertaken in a relatively short timescale and as such will mean you have to make quick and bold decisions based on your own impressions of a place and feelings of how you want to leave your mark for the future. Summerhall has a rich history of change many disparate groups have made it their home at some point and left their mark. Think about how your are going to leave yours!
