The Art of Bridges

7 installations, 7 arches, 7 hills

Bridges were the first structures built by human beings. Before prehistoric people began to build even the crudest shelter for themselves, they bridged streams to get from one place to another. They are what make Edinburgh possible and they bring together the different levels of the city. Using these simple, unique and yet very complex engineering structures; my aim is to break the boundaries between ‘up’ and ‘down’, to create interactions between ‘inside’ and ‘outside’. My aspiration is to connect individuals, provoke new actions, encourage ideas and promote energy.

The result of the project is a series of 7 installations under 7 bridges creating a journey through the city centre that links the different Museums and Art Galleries.

Each artwork is associated with one of the 7 hills of the city, exploring the association of the words ‘hill’ and it’s antithesis ‘depression’. The aim is to prove that it is always possible to transform a space or a state of mind into something positive. The installations reveal the true nature of the bridges as well as their potential,  which will be turned into very intriguing spaces, linking up with down and encouraging people to reach out.
