The art of bridges
Final year project
4th year Interior Design ECA
ECA, Edinburgh, Scotland 2014
Bridges were the first structures built by human beings. Before prehistoric people began to build even the crudest shelter for themselves, they bridged streams to get from one place to another. They are what make Edinburgh possible, joining the different levels of the city. Using these unique, simple, and yet very complex engineering structures, my aim is to break the boundaries between being ‘up’ and being ‘down’ and create interaction between ‘inside’ and ‘outside’. My aspiration is to connect individuals, elicit new actions, ideas, and foster energy.
The result of the project is a series of 7 installations under 7 bridges creating a journey through the city centre linking the different museums and art Galleries.
Each artwork is associated with one of the 7 hills of the city, exploring the association of the words ‘hill’ and his contrary ‘depression’. The aim is to prove that it is always possible to transform a space or a state of mind into something positive. The installations reveal the true nature of the bridges, which will be turned into very intriguing spaces, linking up and down, encouraging people to reach out.
