CHANDELIER - North bridge - Castle Rock
CONCEPT
I want to encourage people to look at the structure of the bridge: not on the length but on the width. It gives another experience of it, realising the complexity of the structure. For that the all light installation will be hanged form underneath the structure.
I designed swings made out of fibre optic. They allow to have an unusual break looking at a majestic modern chandelier in fibre optic too, recalling the contour of castle rock. The choice of reinvent the chandelier is to recall the imposing character of the castle and the monarchy, but showing that it is a bygone days and now we are in modernity.
The light installation is piercing the bridge, linking over and under, encouraging people to from up to down and vice versa.
PROCESS
I first looked at more conventional swings and chandeliers.
Then I moved to neon placed on the structure, going on when people, cars and buses pass over of captors installed on top of the bridge. I experimented with a top view of the castle and the contours: the result was an abstract visual for both of them, not really accessible.
I came back to my research and realised that I had to simplify the idea: working with thin lines of light could be really efficient, it would give grandeur of the bridge itself, and would allow to see it from far (the top of Arthur seat for example). It also facilitate linking what is happening over the bridge with the installation below.
The swing made out of recycled materials, such as rejected fire hoses like in the examples were not matching with the light installation. I had this idea to made them out of fibre optic too. I talked about it with a light designer, who confirmed me that it was possible. I had the positive feeling that I created something special.
