INFINITY - George IV/Merchant street - Braid hills
CONCEPT
Under this small arch, the goal is to recreate the open space sensation you have on Braid hills. For that I recovered the internal surface of the bridge with mirrors, allowing to have infinitive reflection into reflection.
A neon suspension of the shape of the contour of Braid hills, recall the night character of this area of the town: Grassmarket, cowgate...
It gives a craziness into the reflection, and a more interesting aspect of the work.
The metal pieces of the floor are also cut following the contour of the hills: the spatial coordinates and the hight are engrave on the metal, helping the viewers to understand the project.
Higher and lower boxes on each side are installed as seats or to put back glasses at night when people are staying outside the pubs and restaurants.
Outside the arch, on each sides, two mirrors are attach to the buildings reflecting the installation, to allow people walking at the top of the bridge to see a little of it and encouraging to go down.
PROCESS
First, I did some sketches to find how I wanted the mirrors to be like and experimenting with the shape of the benches.
Then, I experimented with folded paper, and triangular shape for the mirrors. I loved the effect (other pictures on next page) but I didn’t get the infinity reflection I was looking for. After studying the different cases study, I understood that the solution was to make them with rectangular shape, installed with an angle of 90 degrees with the floor.
To add more complexity to it I created boxes with he same mirrored materials: they act as seats and high table to put back glasses at night when people are staying outside the pubs and restaurants.
I looked at cladding panel system, but it required to fix it on the wall and I didn’t want to affect the bridge. I decided to design my own structure.
I had to resolve the problem of fixing the mirrors to the structure.
My first attempt wasn’t working. I had to think simpler, and in fact the solution was very easy (on the next page).
I did few experimentations staging the concept in cinema 4D to understand the light and how the reflections were working with the different materials during the different time of the day.
