IMMERSION - King’s bridge - Claiglockhart hills

CONCEPT

The concept is to recreate a natural reserve like Craighlockart hill under and around the bridge. King’s bridge is the only one in the city centre with some vegetation around and on top of it. By planting even more plants on top and create a living wall under, I want to create the sensation that the plants are growing on both directions.

This installation stimulates the sense. It has a very good acoustic: to take advantage of it, sounds recorded on the hill are emitting from under the fake vegetation under it and from the plants on top of it. In addition, smell from the flower (artificial one) are spread, bringing you in an enchanted place.

PROCESS

I started from the beginning at looking at plants and how to grow them under the bridge. The problem was I had no idea how to bring light under the bridge. I looked at living wall and discovered stabilised plants. I thought I found what I was looking for: real plants which don’t need any care. The problem is that they are not suitable for a humid environment and natural light. Altough light isn’t a real issue, humidity is a show-stopper. I had to come back to the idea of natural or fake plants. I chose to install real plants at the top and fake ones under. Nowadays, fake flowers and leafs looks like real ones and it will be much easier to take care during a year, therfore it is a more appropriate solution. In addition I decided to install flowers, use flower smell spray and speakers with sounds of the forest. The flowers would be installed on rails of the shape of the contour of Craiglockhart hill.
