What is art ?
‘The art described by Bourriaud (Director of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, an art school in Paris, France) rejects the idea of the artist as autonomous maker and of the objects as trancendental vessel, seeing itself instead as ‘a set of artistic practices wich take as their theorical and practical point of departure the whole of human relations and their social context.’ The importance was that the audience was now acknowledged as cocollaborator in making the work, a participant through their encountr with the artist or situation and a necessary presence in shaping the outcome. The role of the artist was to create the situation or social space for the encounter, an egalitarian levelling of roles between artist and audience in order to promote dialogue and exchange.’
‘The role of the 20th century artist was to ask lots of questions, and our model for this century is for them to start coming with a few answers, rather than standing on the side lines just criticising and pointing and making fun of things. So there are quite sincere ambitions in all this - despite the complications and the humour and so on - to effect change and help people manage change in their day to day lives... In a way, our role is to be a catalyst to start people thinking about how they might construct and handle their futures’. Alistair Hudson
Grizedale arts, adding complexity to confusion
“Artists are scary. They celebrate individualism. They portray the nuances and emotions of life in abstract terms. An artist’s mission is not to entertain although entertainment can be a desired by-product. Their mission is to give the receiver of the artistic statement emotions and impressions to reflect upon. Whether the receiver likes or dislikes the statement is secondary.” Tim Hagans
