Summerhall Masterplan - Presentation
Final Submission
This proposal for the conversion of Summerhall into a mediathèque strives to create a place were culture, learning and entertainment will be open to everyone. Contemporary cultural event such as photo exhibitions, as well as plays, con- certs, storytelling for kid, literary discussions, films projections and much more will be organised all year.
The proposed construction is to link all the buildings together and create a central space with a hight of 12 meters at the very top, with a glass roof. In contrast to the classical 18th century buildings, it gives a large dynamic space, providing a larger degree of freedom and light with the irregular pieces of glass holding by an original steel structure, and wood columns. This atrium serves a seating area made with benches attached to the columns, a gallery space, a cafe, a library, a children playground, a shop and an access to the 5th floors multimedia tower (where you can play games, listen to and borough music, movies, play music in- struments or video games, and finally rent a photo or music studio). Besides, it is open on the central garden with tables and seats to enjoy summertime. The other levels of the old building offer an other space for the library, a link to the tower, a children and a teenager library, working spaces, a computer room, 2 cinemas, and a small cafe with a roof terrace.
In addition to that, a brand new theatre will be opened in the building and a large number of modular conference and meeting rooms will be available to schools and companies.
This proposal introduces a multicultural and multimedia hub for the entire family from young kids to adults and teenagers. Elderly will also find books and classics in the library, as well as the conferences, plays and lectures.
Is is an opened place meant to be accessible to all unlike University Library and
more interactive and diversified than a traditional Library or Arts Centre.
